SaltWire's Atlantic regional weather forecast for October 26, 2023 | SaltWireDr. Scott Millington compares a new virtual critical care program at The Ottawa Hospital to phoning a friend for advice. For some health providers, families and patients at smaller hospitals outside the city, the program is proving to be a lifeline.

Millington said that fewer nurses have, so far, used the service than doctors, but he is hoping that changes.“If a nurse is in a difficult situation, is feeling unsure, they can be connected directly to a person in ICU who can provide moral support.” A separate program already exists in Ontario to link smaller hospitals with bigger ones when it comes to patients in immediate need of evacuation to a larger hospital for intensive care, Millington said.

Nader, whose last name is not being used to protect his privacy, has complex and severe health issues as a result of a brain injury at birth. Cortes provides foster care to him at her home south of Ottawa. It was a call to the virtual care program and the resulting care that allowed Nader to return home, Cortes said.
