The all-in-one platform uses nanotechnology and AI to identify a plethora of diseases, from COVID-19 to E.coli, in just 13 minutes, a new study finds.
That’s on par with “gold standard” qPCR tests, but performed in a fraction of the time, said lead author Sara Mahshid, an assistant professor of bioengineering at McGill and Canada research chair in nanobiosensing devices, in an interview with the Star.
About the size of a laptop, Mahshid said QolorEX is far more portable than a PCR machine. It’s also capable of “fully automated” sample preparation, meaning it doesn’t require skilled clinicians to work on patients’ saliva before testing. Perhaps most importantly, it gets results in minutes — three minutes for sample preparation, ten for detection — while PCR can take hours.
Through its interactions with an “innovative nanotechnology” inside the cartridge, the sample would then turn a different colour depending on what pathogen is present, Mahshid said. This colour is imaged and later processed by the lab’s AI, which finally sends its results directly to your phone through an app.
“I think it's a great piece of science,” Li said. “The group combined several concepts together and achieved, I would say, a marvellous detection method that can detect diverse pathogens at excellent sensitivity.”
