A study of 19 million adults in England reveals demographic and clinical patterns of long COVID, highlighting higher rates among women, middle-aged adults, and those with comorbidities, with vaccination linked to lower incidence.
By Vijay Kumar MalesuMay 22 2024Reviewed by Susha Cheriyedath, M.Sc. In a recent study published in the journal EClinicalMedicine, researchers described the incidence and differences in demographic and clinical characteristics of recorded long coronavirus disease in primary care records in England.
About the study The present study utilized a database of 19 million adults in England, managed by The Phoenix Partnership SystmOne , covering 40% of General Practitioner practices. Data was accessed via the Open Secure Analytics For Electronic Health Records platform, which ensures data remains pseudonymized and excludes free text.
Crude long COVID rates per 100,000 person-years and negative binomial models adjusted for confounders were estimated. Monthly incidences and a Sankey diagram illustrated SARS-CoV-2 histories. Ethical approval was obtained from relevant committees, and the OpenSAFELY platform uses legal powers that bypass the need for patient consent.
