The District of Sooke said it has received $353,499 from the province to build two accessible toilets, widen the staircase access to the river beach and install new signs and a visitor information kiosk.
The lower parking lot, which is the property of the district, will also see improvements and additional spaces. Crews will be mobilizing on the site starting March 27, and the district expects to have substantial work completed before the May long weekend.The lower lot provides access to a river beach and trail system that also connects to the Sooke Potholes Regional Park, maintained by the Capital Regional District.
Atop the Potholes, the Spring Salmon Place Campground is operated by the T’Sou-ke First Nation. It operates seasonally from mid-May to mid-September. Funding for the Sooke Potholes improvements comes through the province’s Community Economic Recovery Program. In February, the province earmarked $41.3 million for 40 tourism infrastructure projects, including 10 on Vancouver Island.
