Wotton spoke to SaltWire Network on the morning of the ninth, the day P.E.I.’s new overnight emergency shelter partially opened at 72 Park St. in Charlottetown.
During the tour, Shelley Cole, supportive housing manager, and Jason Doyle, housing services director, both with the Department of Social Development and Housing, explained some of the shelter’s logistics and amenities. While only 25 of the 50 new shelter spaces on Park Street were set to open at 8 p.m. on Dec. 9, the remaining units will be opening on Dec. 16, Cole said.

While the shelters are only open from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m., clients can keep personal items in lockers during the day, Cole said.
