Some of the installations aim to reflect Chinese culture, such as the Boonie Bears, a popular Chinese children’s cartoon series where two bears named Briar and Bramble prevent Vick the logger from destroying their home forest, and the Journey to the West, a 16th century Chinese novel that has left modern cultural impacts on Chinese mythology and religion. Others are geared simply towards attracting families and children to Chinatown.
The full list of characters includes: the Boonie Bears; characters from the Journey to the West; pandas; yellow new year bunnies in red Chinese robes; blue dogs; multi-coloured dinosaurs; yellow deer; and the pink silhouettes of jazz musicians. “I think the attention that we have received is massive,” he said. “Even during the installation of the selfie stations, people stop by and ask what they are and if they’re going to stay permanently or if it’s just for a special holiday event decoration. And, when they know that these are permanent, they are going to stay in Chinatown, they are so happy.”
