Aspiring rare earths producer VHM says China deal is just the start of its plans for large-scale mine in rural Victoria.

Perth-based billionaire Mr Ellison has long been the aspiring rare earth and mineral sand producer’s biggest shareholder, with ByrneCut group executive chairman Steve Coughlan among other high-profile investors.

in December after pumping $60 million into a $121 million capital raising to advance the Nolans project in the Northern Territory.Dr Forrest has set Fortescue Metals Group chief executive-in-waiting Fiona Hick the task of making the company a force in rare earths. Last August his private-owned Wyloo Metals invested $150 million in WA rare earths developer Hastings Technology Metals to allow Hastings to purchase a stake in Canadian magnet maker Neo Performance Materials.

“The company is advancing discussions with a whole series of European and North American off-take partners, so it is not limited to just one area of the globe,” Mr Howard said. Mr Howard said VHM had been working on the project for six years and put a lot of time and effort into community consultation and easing initial concerns.
