MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. appointed Associate Justice Geraldine Faith Econg as the new presiding judge of the Sandiganbayan.Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin confirmed the appointment of Econg, whose appointment paper was signed by the President on Jan. 7. Econg will replace former Sandiganbayan presiding justice Amparo Cabotaje-Tang, who retired in November last year.
Cabotaje-Tang was an appointee of then president Benigno Aquino 3rd, who named her as Sandiganbayan chief in October 2013.Econg, a seasoned jurist, has distinguished a career in the Philippine judicial system. In 2016, Econg was appointed as an associate justice of the Sandiganbayan, where she served as the chairman of its Second Division. Prior to her tenure at the Sandiganbayan, Econg held various judicial roles, including presiding judge of the Regional Trial Court Branch 9 in Cebu City from 2004 to 2010. She later became the Judicial Reform Program Administrator of the Supreme Court's Program Management Office from 2010 to 2015. The following year, she served in the Philippine Judicial Academy prior to her appointment as Sandiganbayan associate justice. Econg finished her law studies with cum laude honors at the University of San Carlos in Cebu. In 2021, she was also nominated as one of the nine candidates for the position of Associate Justice of the Supreme Court. Econg will retire from the Sandiganbayan on Aug. 6, 2037 upon reaching 70 years old. The Sandiganbayan is the country's special appellate collegial court that has jurisdiction over criminal and civil cases involving graft and corrupt practices, and other offenses committed by government officials and employees
