The 30\u002Dyear RCMP veteran said he will bring a new perspective to the job and build on a fundamentally sound police service.
Stubbs, a former assistant commissioner with the RCMP, has been in the city for several days, but officially assumed leadership of the Ottawa Police Service on Thursday. He met Mayor Mark Sutcliffe and city councillors at their swearing-in ceremony earlier this week.Sign up to receive daily headline news from Ottawa Citizen, a division of Postmedia Network Inc.By clicking on the sign up button you consent to receive the above newsletter from Postmedia Network Inc.
Stubbs takes over command of the Ottawa Police Service at a difficult time in its history. The public lost faith in the service during the month-long occupation of downtown Ottawa while the ongoing Emergencies Act inquiry has exposed deep dysfunction within the service’s senior ranks. Stubbs told reporters he has watched the Emergencies Act inquiry carefully. “I’m just watching and listening right now and I know the recommendations will come out,” he said. “It will be interesting to see what that says.”
“It all adds up to a lot more work for our membership,” he said. “So we want to try to support them and get them the tools they need to do their jobs.” “If they can go to those calls without us,…that’s fantastic,” he said. “It’s better for the person going through the crisis, and it’s better for our membership, too…We need to shift that responsibility to others that are more capable in the community.”
