There was no mention of progress in talks over the two areas – Demchok and Depsang – where troops of Asia’s two big powers face off, almost eyeball to eyeball. While Beijing has all-weather roads close to much of the undemarcated Himalayan boundary, India has matched that with its own road building over the past 15 years. It has also reactivated disused forward airfields. India’s activities, particularly in the Ladakh region, which overlooks Xinjiang province, is viewed with wariness by China as it leaves the Tibet-Xinjiang land link vulnerable to disruption by Indian strikes.have added friction to bilateral ties.
In early March, Nepal’s Maoist-led government ditched its pro-India coalition partner for the Beijing-leaning Communist Party of Nepal . A Chinese military delegation arrived in Kathmandu days after the switch with offers to strengthen defence ties. China used to leave a 100km margin from the Indian border in bidding for contracts in Nepal’s populous Terai lowlands bordering India, but has dropped such qualms lately.
