A minimally invasive procedure called renal denervation is showing promise in treating high blood pressure, especially in patients whose condition is resistant to medication. The procedure involves zapping nerves in the kidneys that play a role in regulating blood pressure. While not a cure and not suitable for everyone, renal denervation has been shown to modestly reduce blood pressure and allow some patients to gradually decrease their medication.

Many people don’t even realize they have hypertension until it’s done serious damage. The top, “systolic” pressure, is the force blood puts on the walls of arteries as its pumped out of the heart.

Medicine is a must once hypertension reaches 140 over 90. The average patient requires two or three drugs, sometimes more, along with healthier living, Zusman said.
