A new outdoor Indigenous gathering space has opened at Queen's University in Kingston, Ont., to give people a way to engage with Indigenous knowledge on campus.

"I consider this to be a gathering space in the same way that, historically, this land has been a gathering place for many Indigenous nations," Baptiste said.Indigenous people should feel reflected in the university's curriculum and feel welcome on campus, Baptiste said.

"Our hope is that all students at Queen's have the ability to learn from and engage with our Indigenous ways of knowing, teaching and learning," Baptiste said. When she was first accepted, Mitchell said she almost hesitated saying yes — in part because of the architecture, which "seemed so cold when I first saw it."

"All of that welcoming and the love and the generosity that we felt that day, I feel every time I look at this new building, so I'm really excited," Mitchell said.
