For Republicans who voted to oust McCarthy — and who faced weeks of vitriol from their colleagues — Johnson’s election vindicated their decision.as extreme, pointing to his opposition to certifying Joe Biden’s electoral win, his vote against further Ukraine aid, and his antiabortion and anti-LGBTQ stances. The most immediate emergency is funding for the government, which is set to run out of money Nov. 17, and some have little confidence Johnson can handle the task of bringing together a deeply divided conference on the most contentious issue facing their party. When it became clear the Jordan could not gain the speaker’s gavel, Johnson, as well as eight other candidates, began making calls over the weekend to gauge jumping into the speaker’s race.
