But at the same time, she realizes that many people called the building home. Suddenly they were on the street. “We were like having discussions with Community Services to try and figure out a plan, but it just came so quickly.”DeYoung made a post on Facebook shortly after finding out, alerting the community about what had happened and they expected to see a spike in need. She was warmed by the response in both monetary and physical donations.
“This is a very scary housing crisis that our community is experiencing, and we've noticed that our clients are remaining homeless for much longer periods of time because they are unable to find affordable housing,” she said. “As one can imagine, this has a significant impact on their physical and mental health.”
At the shelter, they’ve done everything they can to help, but they face their own challenges with rising food costs and other factors. DeYoung said the Viola’s Place Society has recently submitted a proposal to the Community Services Recovery Fund for funding to renovate the basement of the former church to offer overflow shelter, which would allow space to accommodate an additional 25 people. They are waiting for word on whether that will be approved.
