Young women in pink-collar industries have replaced blue-collar males as the dominant unionist. And their unions are wielding huge political power at elections.
Traditionally male-dominated blue-collar unions continue to lose members as older workers retire and manufacturing declines. While men are still more likely to be unionists in the private sector, women dominate unions overall at 13.6 per cent of the workforce compared with 11.6 per cent for men. And the unions growing the most are health and education – nurses and teachers.
“We have witnessed significant growth in our membership throughout the COVID-19 pandemic and are proud to have more than 323,000 members across both the public and private healthcare sectors,” Ms Sharp said. “In all honesty, the last three years have been the changing factor,” she said. “The [union] rallies are capturing the attention of people like myself who have been in the profession for only four years but it feels like it’s 40. It’s a really brutal time and really hard to convince yourself to stay.
Its former leaders include Jennie George, who was ACTU president in 1996 and served as a federal Labor MP from 2001 to 2010.Meanwhile, United Workers Union national secretary Tim Kennedy, whose union has the largest blue-collar membership at about 150,000, has seen membership decline by almost 5 per cent or 6000 members during the pandemic.“We’ve got really uneven density across all our sectors.
