Newly appointed BFAR Director Elizer Salilig outlines his commitment to revitalizing the aquaculture industry and promoting sustainable fisheries practices through research and development.
Elizer Salilig , the newly appointed director of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources ( BFAR ), has pledged to revitalize the aquaculture industry and production through focused research and development initiatives. Salilig emphasized the importance of collaboration with government agencies and academic institutions to enhance research efforts during his appointment by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
He expressed a strong commitment to strengthening the aquaculture sector and transitioning towards sustainable fisheries practices in the face of growing climate change challenges. Salilig, who began his career as a fishery technician for the Department of Agriculture in Region XII, aims to lead the BFAR in fulfilling its mission: ensuring fish sufficiency, elevating the quality of life for fisherfolk, and aligning with the President's vision of boosting productivity and yields, ultimately improving their living standards. His appointment has been welcomed by various fisherfolk cooperatives and local government units, particularly those with significant fishing communities. They believe that having a career official with extensive experience at the helm of the agency will be highly beneficial for the fisheries sector.President Marcos Jr. recently appointed Salilig, a public servant dedicated to fisheries management for the past 34 years, to lead the BFAR. He was sworn into office by Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel on January 24, 2025. Juliet Gutierrez, president of Samaka Sablayan, an association of over 20 cooperatives, highlighted Salilig's role in assisting them in organizing cooperatives for women fisherfolk in the MIMAROPA region (Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, and Palawan) to achieve their goal of establishing a women fisherfolk cooperative in each municipality. Geraldo Abello, chairperson of Dahilican Roxas Fishermen Cooperative, credited Salilig for empowering fishers in Oriental Mindoro to become entrepreneurs and engage in small businesses beyond fishing. Mayor Elegio Malaluan of Bongabong and president of the League of Mayors of Oriental Mindoro, noted that Salilig's previous role as regional director of BFAR-MIMAROPA strengthened cooperation and collaboration between the agency and local government units, particularly in enforcing and implementing fisheries laws, rules, and regulations. This collaborative effort aims to maintain a peaceful environment for both commercial and municipal fishers.Salilig emphasized the BFAR's responsibility to improve the lives of fisherfolk, a sector crucial for ensuring food security for all Filipinos. Addressing his colleagues at BFAR for the first time since his appointment, Salilig stressed the importance of the fisheries sector as a key pillar in both the food supply chain and the national economy. He reiterated the agency's commitment to supporting fishers and enhancing their livelihoods through appropriate support and quality services.
