Flasher wrasse are popular aquarium fish known for their eye-catching courtship performances but an Australian Museum taxonomist says surprisingly little is known about those living in Australian waters.
, or red tailed flasher wrasse, commonly found in waters around Fiji.
There are about 21 species of flasher wrasse, most of which live in the coral triangle, an area stretching from the northern Philippines to the tip of Cape York Peninsula and the Solomon Islands. He said the wrasses' tendency to live on rubble pans of dead coral, rather than vibrant reefs themselves, may partly explain how they have remained poorly understood."The habitat itself is actually quite boring and quite monotonous, which is why a lot of divers don't actually go there, because there's really not much to see," Dr Tea said.
