Labor is so timid it daren’t even capitalise on its point of difference with the Coalition on climate policy. They have abandoned that field to the 'teals', writes Jacqueline Maley | OPINION auspol ausvotes
At best, elections are unique opportunities to focus the national attention on pressing issues, and forge a consensus to address those issues. At worst, well, I think we might be looking at it.
Remember when former Labor leader Bill Shorten was caught out in the 2019 campaign, unable to answer basic questions about the cost of his proposed climate policies? This campaign, Morrison has gotten away with not answering any questions about the cost of his proposed emissions reductions targets. Separate to not disclosing any structural costs of the decarbonising process, Morrison is getting off scot-free over the $14 billion bill for the Nationals’ compliance.
They have to convince their moderate, climate change-engaged voters that, truly, we swear, the Nationals have lost the battle on climate policy within the Coalition, and that once re-elected, the Nats won’t have any influence on climate policy. It’s a difficult and absurd position to have to defend. The result is a party that looks increasingly like a downhill skier whose skis are pointed in different directions. A groin injury is guaranteed.
Australia faces an enormous amount of debt , a looming climate catastrophe which will have severe effects on our children if not addressed immediately, and a geopolitical landscape which might see those same kids drawn into military conflict as the rest of us age out. Meanwhile, it is uncertain if the majority of them will even be able to own homes.
