Two Toronto NDP MPPs accused Ontario’s Transportation Minister of weakening public trust in Metrolinx after arevealed her office directed the provincial transit agency to exclude the politicians from a notice about tree removals in their ridings.
The emails shed light on the relationship between the province and the transit agency, which was designed in 2006 as an arm’s-length agency to be able to impartially evaluate and implement multibillion-dollar transit projects. Metrolinx has increasingly faced criticism for its apparent closeness to Ontario’s Tories.
The email chain, which begins in December 2022 and ends in January, is a back-and-forth between roughly a dozen people at Metrolinx and the province discussing the communications plan regarding tree removals for the Ontario Line, specifically in Moss Park, Riverside and Leslieville, and the Don Valley.
