The NDP’s 2021 convention was held virtually due to COVID. Some members are warning a refusal to continue a virtual option would harm key constituencies: rural Canadians, people with disabilities and those who can't afford to travel.
PublishedNDP Leader Jagmeet Singh at the West Block of Parliament Hill in Ottawa on Oct. 20, 2022.
Current and former New Democrats believe the party is tarnishing its reputation on accessibility by failing to respond to their requests to have a virtual participation option at its upcoming convention. The biannual event for the federal branch of the party is slated to take place in Hamilton from Oct. 13 to 15, but sources toldthey haven’t received any indication they can take part remotely. If there isn’t a virtual option, a past member and a present member said, the party risks losing some of the core groups it claims to fight for. This includes rural Canadians, people with disabilities and others who may not be able to afford extensive travel.
“For a lot of people, this will be the last straw,” said Melissa Samms, who is a member of the party in Newfoundland and Labrador. “People are frustrated with the direction the NDP is going. They just want to see better and they’re not seeing it.”
