The new schedule released this week opens the parkways to vehicles on Wednesdays from 8 a.m. until 30 minutes past sunset, and after noon on Saturdays and Sundays. All other times, the roadways are restricted to active users such as cyclists.“The additional times for private vehicle access from last year’s schedule … recognizes the interest in midweek morning access in the absence of a weekday shuttle service for the 2023 summer season,” the NCC said in a media release.
The NCC began limiting vehicle access to the inner reaches of the park, including popular sites like Pink Lake and Champlain Lookout, in 2020. Critics said it unfairly restricted access by hikers and walkers, the disabled and young families who aren’t able to make the strenuous bicycle hill climb into the park.
