National Master Almario Marlon Bernardino Jr. is scheduled to play simultaneous chess exhibition matches in Pozorrubio, Pangasinan on Jan. 11, 2025. Bernardino, who is also a certified United States Chess Master, will play multiple games against students and chess enthusiasts. Sports man Ernesto Salcedo III said this is part of the series of chess activities in Pozorrubio, a first class municipality in the province of Pangasinan. 'We're excited.
The students and residents of Pozorrubio are eager to meet and even play NM Bernardino in simultaneous chess exhibition,' said Salcedo, who is also the vice mayor of Pozorrubio. 'NM Bernardino is the perfect choice to do the rare simultaneous chess exhibitions here because he is a native of Binalonan, Pangasinan.'Bernardino is fresh from a 7th place finish in the 16th Penang Heritage City International Chess Open 2024 Chess Championship which culminated on Dec. 27, 2024 in Penang, Malaysia. Bernardino is also the coach and delegation head of the Philippine chess team which collected 2 gold medals and a bronze in the 32nd FIDE World Senior Chess Championship held in Porto Santo Island, Portugal on Nov. 16-29, 2024. Bernardino's most recent victory is the 3rd Laos International Chess Open 2024 held Vientiane, Laos on Sept. 1-6, 2024. Among those who are supporting his chess campaign here and abroad are ALC Group of Companies Chairman and CEO D. Edgard Cabangon, international billiard and snooker champion Marlon Manalo and Mr. Jessie Villasin. The 47-year-old Bernardino is set to compete in the Sydney International Open 2025 to be held on April 23-27, 2025 in Sydney, Australia. Aside from the simul, there will also be a one-day chess tournament backed by Mayor Kelvin Tan, Vice Mayor Salcedo and SK Municipal Federation President Vince Karl Thirdy Sarmiento.The champion here will run away with the P10,000 prize while the runner-up pockets P5,000
