Australia is all aboard the Matildas, and the Socceroos, as they do us proud on the world stage. But their achievements only highlight an issue to be ashamed of.

The Socceroos and the Matildas continue to unite us on the world stage, yet they don't even have the necessary facilities to help them prepare for these global tournaments.

Compare that to some of the other codes in Australia and you've got the politicians throwing money at the NRL and AFL for centres of excellence in the suburbs to be used by individual clubs while soccer can't even successfully lobby the government for the funds needed to build a specialist operation for its International teams and programs.

Socceroos coach Graham Arnold summed up the situation in a recent interview on the ABC where he declared, "I'm bringing players back from Europe that are top class players and they've got the best training facilities in Europe... They come back, we stay in a hotel, we've got no recovery centre"."The boys have to get an ice bath, get ice, put it in their own bathtub in their hotel rooms to recover from the flight and get ready for the game.

They're instead forced to hire grounds to train at like Leichhardt Oval, and fancy asking the likes of Sam Kerr and Mat Ryan to sit in a hotel room bath for their recovery. It's not only un-Australian, it's disgraceful treatment of our international superstars. Concerningly Slater revealed "parents in my own area of 14, 15, 16-year-olds are willing to pack up and move overseas in the search of playing professional football… and they aren't necessarily going to the European countries, they are going to places like Scandinavia, Asia and all over the place".
