Airport Customs agents discovered some US$ 12, 000 (in $100 dollar bills) or more than half a million pesos concealed inside a box of a cellular phone from United States.

NAIA Customs district collector Carmelita “Mimel” Talusan said that a package shipped thru FedEx from Arkansas, USA with some USD 12,000 cash in 100 bills was wrapped in aluminum foil and placed inside a cellular phone box that arrived last July 31, 2019.

Talusan said that the money was discovered when it passed the X-ray machine and through the vigilance of customs frontliners assigned at the FedEx warehouse. The undeclared foreign currency was neatly wrapped in aluminum foil possibly to conceal the subject currency from customs scrutiny. Talusan added that the foreign currencies will be seized in favor of the government in violation of Section 1400 in relation to Section 113 of the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act .Case records will be referred to the BOC Legal Service/BATAS for further investigation and determination of probable cause to file a criminal case against the consignee and the licensed customs broker for violation of Section 1401 of the CMTA.

The public is advised to refrain from similar fraudulent schemes as the Bangko Central ng Pilipinas Manual of Foreign Exchange Transaction requires the faithful declaration and accomplishment of Foreign Currency Declaration Forms for importation and exportation of foreign currency in excess of USD10,000 or its equivalent,
