ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — The Newfoundland and Labrador government has begun preparations for the winter season with over $40 million set aside for clearing provincial roadways in 2023-24.
With a fleet of 463 snow plows and loaders already undergoing annual inspection, the province has begun hiring and recalling over 400 seasonal heavy equipment operators, management and staff.Scoop Dogg's rollin' down the street and Plowmageddon is on the way — St. John's reveals winners in first snowplow naming contest
The province has already spent $38 million on securing road salt and sand for the entire season and has begun distributing the product to all 67 depots across the province. An additional $4.25 million is also available to purchase more road maintenance equipment such as loaders, tractor trucks and new medium-duty plow and spreader trucks for local roads.
The department of transportation is also spending $16.6 million this year on 44 new tandem axle plow trucks, expected to join the provincial fleet in 2024-25.
