Sheldon MacLeod says a Tweet calling the media out as 'kingmaker' in reporting on homelessness is not a suggestion we stop covering it, but 'a call to action for politicians to address the systemic issues with a systemic solution.'
Here's a 29-year-old man with serious health concerns who is sharing what it’s like to be out in driving rain, living in a tent and trying to keep warm and fed on supplies they get from a gas station. He shares that tent with his sister and another person who helps care for him. And they’ve been on a waiting list for housing since October. The comment from Eric was: “Great, more homeless people in the news.
And then this stark observation: “Why do we allow reporters and well-intentioned, well-connected members of the public to play kingmaker in people’s lives? Everyone deserves a place to live. Why can they say that one person needs and deserves that hypothetical affordable apartment more than someone else?”
He points out how he’s glad people are recognizing how big an issue homelessness is in HRM. But, “just because it makes you sad in the moment doesn’t mean that it hasn’t been burning out the dozens or more people who work with these folks every day.” We just keep lurching from one crisis to another without any plan or guidance about where to go next. We are always surprised by winter arriving or renovictions or front line staff burning out, without realizing that this is a systemic problem and it requires a systemic response. But he is faulting the government for a lack of a clear, equitable strategy of who we need to prioritize, and how we go about getting them into housing.
