Let’s start with emergency preparedness. Leaving storm chips aside, we have learned we can anticipate and plan for weather events. That said, let’s remember, it’s great if you have a place you can call home, but there are many who do not. But not all businesses could do the same. Either small margins, lack of foresight, or just following standard practice meant if your employer was closed for six days, it also meant no money coming in, while outgoing expenses continued.
However, once numbers dropped, vaccination commenced, and things started re-opening more widely, the companies eliminated the boost in pay. We all experience storms of one kind or another. Our ability to weather those storms is partly due to resiliency – our ability to cope and move forward – and partly due to the resources – financial, family, community – we have at hand.
