PONTIAN: Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has requested the police to be fair after a new ruling that compels candidates campaigning in the Tanjung Piai by-election to obtain police permits for walkabouts.
The Pagoh MP said he does not want to misuse his position as the Home Minister by asking the police to pull back the directive to have permits for walkabouts. "I received complaints that the ruling is a bit strict, as the candidates need to apply for permits for walkabouts or even house-to-house visits."Once the Election Commission announce the nomination, then it is up to the respective candidates and their machineries to do the ground work in wooing the voters," he told a press conference here on Wednesday .
Muhyiddin, who is Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia president, added that he was hopeful the police, even though it is under his ministry, to be considerate and give space to the contesting parties. He said he was not worried about the security in Tanjung Piai and urged the authorities to consider an exemption for the permits.
