Japanese lender Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group will be seeking a bigger slice of the regional leveraged buyouts funding market after poaching a senior Commonwealth Bank of Australia banker.MUFG has hired Angus St. John as head of financial sponsor coverage, Asia Pacific, and tasked him with overseeing its sponsor-led MThe bank said he would also cover sovereign funds, asset management entities and other investor groups, as part of the wider financial sponsors remit.
St John started at MUFG on Tuesday, and reports to Drew Riethmuller, who runs the bank’s corporate and investment banking team for Oceania from Sydney. He was previously head of investor client management at CBA. “The financial sponsors segment is growing in significance in MUFG’s Asia Pacific franchise... Angus will help us deepen our sponsor coverage capabilities, enhance key relationships for mutually-beneficial growth and better connect them to opportunities within MUFG’s regional and global networks,” Riethmuller said.
