The report says Trump directed lawyer Don McGahn to call the acting AG and say that Mueller must be ousted over conflicts of interest. McGahn said no
Public at last, special counsel Robert Mueller’s report revealed to a waiting nation Thursday that President Donald Trump had tried to seize control of the Russia probe and force Mueller’s removal to stop him from investigating potential obstruction of justice by the president.
The Justice Department posted a redacted version of the report online Thursday morning, 90 minutes after Attorney General William Barr offered his own final assessment of the findings. As for the question of whether the Trump campaign had colluded with Russia during the 2016 presidential campaign, Mueller wrote, “While the investigation identified numerous links between individuals with ties to the Russian government and individuals associated with the Trump Campaign, the evidence was not sufficient to support criminal charges.”
The report appears to be most heavily redacted in its first section, which covers Russia’s meddling in the 2016 election and examines contacts between Russian representatives and the Trump campaign. The report concludes there was no criminal culpability by Trump aides. In his Thursday press conference Barr said Mueller recounted the 10 episodes of potential obstruction, but Barr said there was evidence that Trump had “noncorrupt motives.”
“The Russian operatives who perpetrated these schemes did not have the cooperation of President Trump or the Trump campaign — or the knowing assistance of any other American for that matter,” Barr said.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer said in a statement that the only way to restore public trust after Barr’s “regrettably partisan handling” of the report was for Mueller to testify “as soon as possible” before Congress. — Asha Rangappa April 18, 2019However, Mueller said his probe didn’t “exonerate” Trump on the question of whether he obstructed the investigation, according to Barr’s summary. Rather, Mueller said he found evidence “on both sides of the question.”
It's a disgrace to see an Attorney General acting as if he's the personal attorney and publicist for the President of the United States.Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren tweeted that it was “a disgrace” for Barr to act like “the personal attorney and publicist” for Trump.
