Hunter, the Liberal party’s deputy leader, made the announcement Monday, saying that “best serving my party does not at this time include seeking its leadership.”
Just days before the Ontario Liberals meet for their largest annual general meeting in 20 years, MPP and former cabinet minister Mitzie Hunter says she won’t run to be leader of the party.Hunter, the party’s deputy leader, made the announcement Monday, saying “I love my party and the party’s members and I consider them to be my second family. However, after a period of reflection I have concluded that best serving my party does not at this time include seeking its leadership.
“I strongly believe that giving each party member a direct say in the selection of the next leader puts us in line with the Liberal party of Canada and other modern democratic political parties worldwide,” she said in a written statement. “The one-member, one-vote system is not only more democratic but ultimately leads to a stronger party organization that is better placed for electoral success so we can be in a better position to put forward and implement policies that benefit Ontarians.
