Mourners are gathering at Winnipeg's Centennial Concert Hall on Saturday morning to remember Jim Carr, the Manitoba member of Parliament and former Liberal cabinet minister who died earlier this week at age 71.
'Cancer robbed him' of years of service, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says before Saturday memorial for MPJim Carr is seen in this file photo, addressing the Calgary Chamber of Commerce in Calgary in January 2020. The former Liberal cabinet minister's death was announced in the House of Commons on Monday. He was 71.
Carr, who had represented Winnipeg South Centre since 2015, was diagnosed with multiple myeloma — a type of blood cancer — one day after he was re-elected in October 2019. He also battled kidney failure. His family's statement earlier this week said Carr he was pleased to see his private-member's bill, the Green Prairie Economy Act, passed through the House of Commons last week. He worked with all three levels of government, the private sector and Indigenous communities to create the bill, focused on building a green economy in the Prairie provinces.
