Motor Mouth answers all of your EV questions — via drivingdotca Sustainability EV
Well, Allan, I’ve spent the last two years or so testing a variety of EVs specifically for their maximal range on the highway. The test itself is quite simple: I jump on the same section of Toronto’s Highway 407, set the cruise control on 125 kilometres an hour — a little below the median speed here in Ontario — and see how long it takes before the battery in question runs out of free electrons., its 105.2-kilowatt-hour battery able to eke out 414 kilometres before running out of free electrons.
So, Allan, to answer your question not-so-succinctly, if you’re going to hit the open road, my experience is that your actual range on the open road will be anywhere from two to 30 per cent less than rated. And, if you’re planning a Christmas visit to mom and it’s -20 C out, take whatever the car’s official range rating might be and divide it in half.
As for your charging-time query, the answer depends on what you define as “short,” as well as your thoughts on what a complete recharge is. Will the charging times become shorter? Most assuredly. Will an EV with a real-world 600-kilometre highway range ever charge in the same time as an ICE-powered gas-guzzler? Not in my lifetime.Article contentThe more meaningful question is whether the time will ever shrink to the point where mainstream shoppers will switch to battery-powered cars.
