Motion calling for amendment to plan of accommodating 130 asylum seekers at one location in Ballinamore passed by Leitrim County Council
Proposed by Fine Gael Councillor Ita Reynolds Flynn, the motion stated that the plan was "not proportional to the needs of the community infrastructure".
Cllr Reynolds Flynn said Ballinamore is not saying no to the asylum seekers and said she had the utmost sympathy and empathy for them. However she felt strongly that the number being proposed is too many. She also suggested that they could be integrated in houses in the town and therefore would have less effect on social infrastructure such as doctors, nurses and gardaí.
An attempt by Sinn Féin Councillor Brendan Barry to raise the issue of the recent apparent arson attack on Deputy Martin Kenny's car was deemed out of order and he was asked to stick to the motion before the meeting.Independent Cllr Des Guckian said this was a reasonable motion and a reasonable attitude - the Department has been outlandish to expect a small town to take so many, he said.
