More wild weather on its way after Toowoomba slammed with hail, heavy rains
A major clean-up effort is underway in Toowoomba's city centre after a wild storm ripped through the region overnight, dumping a metre of hail and flooding businesses, which have been left to count the cost.Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Felim Hanniffy said the overnight storm dumped isolated falls of 50 millimetres and half-hour falls of 30-to-40mms.Mr Hanniffy said the storm was "caused by a trough and an upper feature" and that it had "amplified instability".
The fast-moving weather system moved from north-eastern New South Wales before crossing the border at about 2am, catching most residents asleep.Owner of Proof BBQ & Booze Ryan Lang said the storm was "completely unexpected"."It hit about 2:30 in the morning so I was asleep … didn't see it coming whatsoever," Mr Lang said.
"I woke up to my morning cook saying there was 'waterfalls of water' coming out of where the light fittings are."To get that call was pretty devastating… we've still got water dripping out of the ceiling. "I'm not sure how long it's going to take to get fixed, I don't know whether we'll be able to reopen or not.A separate storm also dropped significant rainfall over parts of Brisbane."I haven't seen anything like that…. It was really something to behold," Ms Vonhoff said."We just got smashed. The hail was incredible. Not so large in size but just so much of it.
