Beachgoers were urged to get out of the ocean quickly after a school of hammerhead sharks was spotted at an iconic Sydney Beach on Tuesday, renewing the debate about shark nets in the area.
Authorities were forced to close Palm Beach when 10 to 15 hammerhead sharks were spotted roughly 200 metres away from the yellow and red swimming flags.Lifeguards patrolled the ocean on the back of jet skis to ensure that everyone got out of harm's way and exited the water safely.
Swimming flags were taken down and the beach was closed for approximately one hour while lifeguards waited for the sharks to leave the area. The species are not deemed aggressive and their sighting has renewed debate about the use of shark nets along NSW beaches.
