Almost 90 per cent of people in Henan, China's third most populous province, have now been infected with COVID-19, health authorities say. 9News
The figure - revealed by local official Kan Quancheng at a media conference - amounts to about 88 million people, the BBC reports.
Kan did not provide a time frame of infections - but because the previous zero-COVID policy kept cases to a minimum, it's likely most of Henan's infections happened over the past few weeks. China is now facing a surge in cases and hospitalisations in major cities and is bracing for a further spread into less developed areas with the start of the Lunar New Year travel rush, starting this week.
Paxlovid, an oral drug developed by US based drugmaker Pfizer, has been in high demand in China the wave of infections began sweeping the country.
