CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — Security guards will patrol public parks in Charlottetown this summer, but some members of council say it’s not enough. While council voted 10-0 at the April 9 meeting to hire Atlantic Private Protection Service, some members questioned the effectiveness of past years.“I will support tonight, but I would love to see us work towards a seven day a week, as had mentioned in his report.

The vehicle patrol works eight hours each day, seven days a week, for a total of 56 hours each week from May 27 to Sept. 9. While the park has “ambassadors” who can explain park rules and bylaws all seven days of the week, Tweel said the park was too busy to go without security from Monday to Wednesday.“There’s more people in that park now than there ever was during the days, during the evenings,” he said. “There’s a lot of traffic on the boardwalk. There’s a lot of activities taking place in the park.”At the same meeting, Mayor Philip Brown pointed to issues with the one-person patrol which checks in on other parks.

“We’ve heard it over and over again: presence is very important. … And I don't think it’s always from a vehicle that the presence is a comfort to residents in the area.” “I think it’s inevitable there's going to be some activity there, and maybe in years past it might have been sufficient to do a quick drive-by. But I think knowing that extra additional presence is there with the boots on the ground out on the property, maybe doing a walkabout, would be beneficial in that area.”
