The Albanese government says a decade of neglect has made it harder and more expensive to see a doctor than ever before, signalling an appetite for wholesale reform of Medicare that won the support of a growing number of state leaders on Thursday.
“The constant advice we have received across the country is that after nine years of cuts and neglect to Medicare, it has never been harder to see a doctor, and never more expensive - with bulk billing rates in decline, and gap fees constantly going up - than it is right now.”Alex Ellinghausen Butler told reporters on Thursday a key focus of the federal government’s expert taskforce was the concept of multidisciplinary care. This model, supported by, would allow health professionals other than doctors to treat patients with complex needs.
“Medicare is accessed by GPs and nurse practitioners, and allied health professionals under certain conditions. Very few people have access to Medicare ... We have seen what has happened with the NDIS,” she said. “We just don’t want a free-for-all on Medicare. It is a precious resource.”
