Squatter woes in Miri had worsened, with more than 4,000 families living in slums.
“Problems related to squatters are among the most serious social problems in Miri.“The squatters in the city are increasing in number.“Every year, during Budget announcements by both the Federal and state governments, we hear that huge sums of money are being allocated for low-cost housing schemes.“Even several projects promised years ago have not been constructed,” he said.
He urged both the state and Federal governments to build more low-cost housing to house the growing number of squatters. Dr Teo said there must be comprehensive effort by both state and Federal ministries to resolve the woes of urban poor in Sarawak. – By STEPHEN THEN
