Flood levels have stabilised at Echuca overnight with authorities believing the Murray River has peaked, but there is no sign yet that water is receding | pwhatch

A State Control Centre spokesman said the Murray’s water levels remained steady at 94.92 metres on Tuesday morning and was not expected to rise further.The State Emergency Service received six calls for assistance overnight in Echuca and the Bureau of Meteorology has forecast showers for Tuesday morning and afternoon in the town.Authorities said on Monday that they believed the Murray would stay at levels of around 94.9 metres at Echuca for several days before dropping.

A makeshift 2.5 kilometre-long levee successfully protected most of the town from the highest flood levels in a century.The Murray is at its highest level at Echuca since 1916 when it reached 95.28 metres Australian Height Datum, or above sea level.Ray Cross transports sandbags and people down Goulburn Road as part of efforts to hold back the floodwaters in Echuca East.It was 94.77 metres in the floods of 1993, and the worst flood recorded in the town was 96.20 metres in 1870.
