The Yes campaign’s reliance on six-month-old polling regarding Indigenous support for the Voice has drawn condemnation from the No campaign.

Outdated polling showing overwhelming Indigenous support for the Voice has sparked a late-stage brawl over dirty campaign tactics and the crucial question of whether the referendum proposal is divisive among the group it is designed to help.

The website, which lets voters search for polling booths, carries the logo of Yes23 and is authorised by Dean Parkin from Australians for Indigenous Constitutional Recognition. Independent MP Zali Steggall, who supports a Yes vote, said political text messages were “invasive” and the SMS should have disclosed when the polls were done.Australian Polling Council secretary Mark Davis, who also has a senior role at Ipsos, acknowledged that “all research has a shelf life”, but declined to say whether six months was too old.

Victorian Liberal senator James Paterson, who is campaigning for No, said voters in Victoria had received robocalls stating the 80 per cent figure as fact, which he said jarred with the latest evidence. The Yes 23 spokesperson said there was “overwhelming support from Indigenous Australians”. The Voice is also backed by all four land councils in the Northern Territory and the Coalition of the Peaks, which represents more than 80 First Nations organisations and is the formal partner with the government on Closing the Gap.
