A severe weather warning is in place for large parts of New South Wales from the south of Newcastle to the the Illawarra and the Central Tablelands.

“Ongoing major flooding is going to continue in the west and the south of the state over the coming days, weeks, and unfortunately probably months," he said on Saturday.

In addition to heavy rainfall, damaging winds of up to 90km/h are likely to develop along the parts of the coast. “With that heavy rainfall we’re really concerned by the flash flooding risk in particular so as you’re probably aware the soils are saturated and the catchments are full, so any heavy additional rainfall can see things escalating really quickly and a lot of flash flooding occurring across many areas," he said.
