Modern Australia’s definition of wealth is changing with the rise of “singledom”, according to Demographer Bernard Salt.
“Yes being able to secure a divorce if you’re in an unhappy relationship was an important breakthrough,” he told Sky News Business Editor Ross Greenwood.
“But there was another shift as well that’s driving this and this is the postponement to commitment of marriage. “In 1971 the average age of first marriage for Australian women was 21, today it is more likely to be 28 or 29, that seven years has now been transferred to completing education and training, maybe a gap year, trialling relationships, and travel or whatever it is, it’s a lifestyle choice.”
