PETALING JAYA: It was a glorious day for Malaysia in the Indonesian Open when three pairs marched into the quarter-finals of the mixed doubles in Jakarta to make the qualification battle for the Olympic Games an exciting affair.
World No. 5 Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying, Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie and Tan Kian Meng-Lai Pei Jing are in the race to win two tickets for the Tokyo Games.
Yesterday, the national No. 3 and world No. 16 Kian Meng-Pei Jing were the stars of the day when they put on a show-stopping performance to upset Hong Kong’s world No. 7 Tang Chun Man-Tse Ying Suet in a convincing 21-15, 21-14 win in 37 minutes in the second round at Istora Senayan.Kian Meng-Pei Jing were happy over their sweet revenge and said it would be the right tonic ahead of their next match against world No. 13 Chris Adcock-Gabrielle Adcock of England.
In the first round on Wednesday, Soon Huat-Shevon brushed past Japanese world No. 25 pair Kohei Gondo-Ayane Kurihara 21-12, 21-8 in 29 minutes. It was Soon Huat’s first tournament in two months. He has been bugged with hamstring and thigh injuries since his last one-match action in the group tie in the Sudirman Cup in China in May.
“To play this well in the first two rounds means a lot to us because we have been out for so long and were not able to train together as a pair,” said Shevon.“We are still trying to get back our form, so we are not thinking too much against Yilyu-Dongping. We just want to enjoy a good match.”
