This week, Mississauga city council will vote on Mayor Bonnie Crombie’sAt the NBA All-Star game in February, Canadian singer Jully Black sang the national anthem and during the performance, she changed the lyric to “our home on native land” instead of “our home and native land.”which she shared on social media.for her performance, with National Chief RoseAnne Archibald describing Black as “a truth-teller.
In the notice of motion filed by Crombie, the mayor wrote “that wording represented a change in a single word of the anthem that had a ripple effect across the country,” adding that, “this change to the anthem was hailed by Indigenous Peoples across Canada as an Act of Reconciliation and a speaking of the truth.”
The motion proposes that the city of Mississauga pen a letter to the federal government to formally adopt the change from “our home and native land” to “our home on native land.” The motion also proposes sharing the recommendation with the Minister of Indigenous Affairs, the provincial government, as well other mayors in cities across the province to echo calls for the change.to change the English-language version from “in all thy sons command” to make it gender neutral, a move Canadians called “disgusting” and “stupid” according to emails sent to the Prime Ministers Office obtained by the Star.
