Premier Chris Minns has indicated he will outlaw the deadly building product if a nationwide agreement cannot be reached.

Premier Chris Minns has foreshadowed a major Safe Work Australia report recommends a ban on silica engineered stone, indicating NSW will outlaw the deadly building product if a nationwide agreement cannot be reached.

“It’s always better to do it via a national agreement primarily because that engineered stone is generally imported into the country and if there’s difference between the jurisdictions, particularly on the borders, that could be a problem,” he said. “Working on that engineered stone, for in particular construction workers, is a massive issue for long term respiratory illnesses and the number of people who potentially be affected is very, very high,” he said.On Wednesday, Treasurer Daniel Mookhey criticised Caesarstone, a major engineer stone supplier, who took out newspaper ads warning a blanket ban could harm at-risk tradies and scare households, accusing the company of spreading misinformation.
