Mike Drew: Softer side of spring in southern Alberta yyc

There were flowers everywhere, some I recognized like the hedysarum and wolf willow and nasty leafy spurge with other, smaller and less conspicuous blossoms scattered through the gravel parking lot and along the edge of the riverine forest.

Cottonwood fluff finer than spider silk clings to a blade of grass along the Bow River near Carseland, Alta., on Wednesday, June 7, 2023.Yes, it was cottonwood fluff. And once I started looking around for it, it was everywhere. But, dammit, the wind had started back up and it was hard to photograph, especially where it was hung on smaller things like spider silk or rose thorns. It looked very cool through the lens but getting tiny things like that in focus is hard enough when they’re sitting still, let alone bouncing in a 20 km/h wind.Cottonwood fluff on a rose blossom along the Bow River near Carseland, Alta., on Tuesday, June 6, 2023.

It turned out that despite the dull, blustery dawn, it had been a pretty decent day. But as I looked at my pictures I kept noticing all that fluff and how it had caught the mid-morning light.Sunrise on a slough just east of Calgary, Alta., on Wednesday, June 7, 2023.The sun broke the horizon at 5:18 a.m. according to the clock on my dash. It came up as a big orange ball and cast a long shaft of light across the pond on the edge of the city I’d been at the morning before.

But there was no fluff. It might be that there is a surfeit of male trees and a paucity of female trees — the ones that produce the fluff — along this particular stretch of the river. Whatever the reason, beautiful though it was, I continued on downstream. The light was just as lovely at the Carseland weir. It was backlighting the fluffy pods hanging from the cottonwoods and making them sparkle down among the shadows.
