The apples weren’t much bigger than cherries but they looked yummy. I was about to go grab a couple of them when a huge, double-trailer grain truck came roaring up the road behind me and I had to hastily get out of the way.
Looking down from the rim of the canyon I could see that the aspens and poplars were just getting going, while the saskatoons and chokecherries among them were already shades of red and bronze. The cottonwoods down along the river were almost entirely green. But one pond that I’d visited before was still at least partially intact. And I found another of my favourite birds there. Swinging back west again, I stopped at Tolman bridge to poke around the riverine forest. Like at Dry Island, further upstream, fall colour is just getting started along this stretch of the Red Deer River. But in some places, it was glowing.
