The Calgary Flames have signed centre Mikael Backlund to a two-year contract extension, and named him the 21st team captain in franchise history.

The Flames announced the extension on Wednesday afternoon. The extension, keeping the longest-tenured Flame around through 2025-26, has an average annual value of $4.5 million.

The Flames drafted Backlund 24th overall in 2007. Since then, he has amassed 492 points, including 185 goals and 307 assists through 908 games with the franchise. In 2022-23, the 34-year-old scored 19 goals and 37 assists.“Calgary is our home and to know that we will continue my playing career here is important to us. As well, the possibility to play 1,000th game this year as a Flame and celebrate it with our fans and the community is significant to me.

Backlund won the King Clancy Memorial Trophy for his humanitarian efforts throughout the 2022-23 season. “Mikael Backlund is our captain. He has been our captain for some time. Today we are excited to extend Mikael for two more seasons and officially add the captaincy to his jersey,” Flames general manager Craig Conroy said. This is a breaking news story.
